There’s nothing quite like a great book to inspire you. It can take you away to new worlds, introduce you to amazing characters and motivate you to be your best self. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’ve put together a list of four books by women writers that will undoubtedly inspire you. “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood

This dystopian novel is set in a near-future America where the government has been overthrown and replaced by a totalitarian regime. Women are strictly controlled and their only purpose is to bear children. The story follows the handmaid Offred as she tries to survive in this oppressive society.

“The Color Purple” by Alice Walker

Set in the early 20th century, “The Color Purple” follows the story of Celie, a young black woman who is abused by her father and then married off to a man who mistreats her. Through the course of the novel, Celie grows into a strong and independent woman.

“The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath

This semi-autobiographical novel follows the story of Esther Greenwood, a young woman who is struggling to find her place in the world. After a summer internship at a magazine, Esther falls into a deep depression and attempts to take her own life. The novel chronicles her journey as she tries to recover and find her way back to herself.

“The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank

This is the famous diary of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who was forced into hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Through her diary entries, we see Anne’s transformation from a naïve child to a wise and compassionate young woman.
