Since 2011, the annual Berkshire Festival of Women Writers has offered readings, workshops and other events celebrating the talents of a diverse spectrum of women writers, from established authors to students and seniors sharing their writing in public for the first time.

From politics to publishing, the voices of women and girls continue to be under-represented in the public sphere.  The Festival counters this trend by creating multiple platforms for women to step into the spotlight, share their words and inspire others to do the same.

A true labor of love, the Festival is produced by a volunteer organizing committee headed by Founding Director Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez.  Most presenters offer their talents pro bono, and most Festival events are free, thanks to the generosity of our host venues and collaborators.

And we’re growing!

In 2013, more than 150 women and girls presented at 55 events held in more than 30 venues county-wide. Praise from the thousands of attendees was heart-warming, and the 2014 Festival will be bigger and better than ever!

Responding to requests from Festival presenters and audiences, we’ve started a monthly “Lean In with the BFWW” group in collaboration with the Berkshire Museum.  The free, drop-in group provides a supportive, spirited atmosphere for women at any stage of their journey as writers.

We’re collaborating with The Mount to offer free special events by and for women writers year-round.  In June, we partnered with the Lift Ev’ry Voice Festival to bring poet Nikki Giovanni to the Berkshires.  In September, we offered a splendid evening of women “Writing from the Heart.”

We’re also exploring the creation of a mentoring program for student writers, working with local schools.

Thrilled at the success of our Festival, we invite you to join us in supporting the creativity of women and girls in Berkshire County.
